Breast and Cervical Cancer Services
This is a WV funded program designed for women age 25 to 64 who do not have insurance, Medicaid or Medicare. Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners who have completed training provide a clinical breast exam and pap test for eligible women (based on income) along with education on risk factors of breast and cervical cancer and how to perform a self breast exam at home. Referrals for Mammograms are provided for all women over the age of 50 and for anyone with an abnormal clinical breast exam. Funding may be available for further diagnosis/treatment.

The Mason County Health Department provides annual screenings for Prostate Cancer each year in September. Dr. Vaidya, a local urologist at Pleasant Valley Hospital, performs a risk assessment for prostate cancer, a digital rectal exam and collects blood for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). This annual screening is eligible for men over 50 years of age who live in Mason County. This screening is provided at no cost to the individual, regardless of income. Follow-up of results are provided by Dr. Vaidya.

The Mason County Health Department provides education and screening for colo/rectalcancer. This is instruction on a take home kit for collection of stool specimens. Once collected, the kit is mailed back to the health department and the results are mailed to the client. These can be obtained by stopping by the health department for a kit and instruction. There is no cost for this service.

The Mason County Health Department participates in various health fairs in the county throughout the year as well as speaking at clubs and organizations on topics that may include health promotion and disease prevention for all age groups. Displays and literature is provided.
The health department has developed a program called Healthy Families…HealthyCommunities that is aimed to promote healthier eating habits and promote increased activity for the entire family. The Mason County Health Department is a provider of the Family Planning Program offered by the Office of Maternal Child and Family Health in WV. This is a federally funded program that offers birth control for men and women who meet income eligibility guidelines, regardless of age. This is a confidential service. This program provides a physical exam, pap test, breast exam and screening for sexually transmitted diseases as well as counseling on other health topics such as pregnancy planning. Contraceptive choices are provided at no cost. Appointments are necessary by calling (304) 675-3050.
Pregnancy testing is provided with referral to appropriate social services and medical needs.
Adult Services
The Mason County offers services for the adult population. These services may include:
Blood pressure monitoring
Body Mass Index determination
Weight monitoring and counseling
Smoking Cessation Counseling (group or individual)
Immunizations (see immunization link)
The Mason County Health Department offers confidential testing for syphilis, gonorrhea, Chlamydia, HIV/AIDS. These tests are performed by appointment at no cost. If medication is needed, it is also provided at no cost. Investigation is performed for all positive results. Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B testing is provided after screening for indigent persons.

The Mason County Health Department receives reports from county laboratories, hospitals and physician offices on reportable communicable diseases as required by law. Investigation, education and follow up of each reported disease is completed by the nursing staff and environmental staff as indicated. These reports are electronically submitted to the WV Bureau of Public Health.
Weekly courtesy phone calls are made to county physicians and hospitals for reporting of communicable diseases.

The Mason County Health Department has an active role in threat and all hazard preparedness by working closely with the OES and LEPC of the county. The health department is a member of the Region 2 Threat Preparedness group which is a nine county planning group (Mason, Putnam, Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, Logan, Mingo, Boone, Jackson). These activities address plans and policies for dispensing of medications, surveillance and follow-up of illnesses, risk communications and planning with the county for influenza outbreaks, such as pandemic influenza. The Mason County Health Department offers screening for tuberculosis disease by performing risk assessments and skin tests every Monday (except the 2nd Monday of the month) from 8:00 am to 10:30 am. No appointment needed.
Preventive therapy for positive skin tests and medication for active disease is provided at no cost as well as chest x-ray and enrollment into our TB control program as indicated. There is no cost for the skin test, medication or chest x-ray.
The Mason County Health Department provides screening for cardiac health at no cost.
This screening includes blood pressure, height, weight, body mass index, total cholesterol, glucose and risk factors for cardiac and diabetes. The cholesterol test is a screening procedure which consists of a finger stick blood specimen and the results are given within five minutes. Education is also provided, with written results that you can take to your physician.

The Mason County Health Department provides screening for diabetes which consists of a questionnaire to determine your risk factor as well as fingerstick blood specimen for your glucose level. Referrals and follow up by your family physician is recommended. There is no cost for this service. Appointments are recommended and you should be fasting for a more accurate result.

The Mason County Health Department provides free test kits for water tests to determine the need for fluoride supplements for households who have children under the age 6 months to 6 years of age. You can stop by the health department for the test kit and instructions for collection. If fluoride supplements are needed, prescriptions or referral to your physician can be made by the staff of the health department.
The Mason County Health Department participates in the Vaccine For Children Program provided by CDC and the Bureau of Public Health. These vaccines are for children from 2 months through the age of 18 who are uninsured, underinsured or Medicaid recipients. Clinics are held every Thursday (except the 2nd Thursday of the month) from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm and on the first Monday of every other month (February, April, June, August, October and December) from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

Seasonal Flu Vaccine
2010-2011 Seasonal Flu Vaccine will include the H1N1 vaccine this year.

Adult Immunizations
Adult immunizations that are offered at no cost include tetanus and pneumonia vaccine.
